If you have the chance, say I love you.

Much of what is shared here stems from experiences that were not as graceful or welcomed as the lessons they’ve left behind. But they stay with me as reminders that whisper: breathe, be here now, lighten up, and especially — this too will pass. It all will.

I saw a post on @tanksgoodnews about the power of speaking to your loved ones in comas and a sweet reminder to “never stop talking.”

Ten years ago today was one of the happiest days of my life, simply because of this tiny exchange.

After entering the hospital for stomach pains just two days after Christmas, my dad drifted into serious conditions, endured an emergency surgery, was in an induced coma, given his last rites, and then beat his own odds time and time again.

Eventually, I had to go back to school and would send texts thinking, “Maybe today’s the day he’ll be strong enough mentally and physically to respond.” Or today, or today, or today.

Ten years ago today was one of the happiest because 43 days after life changed as we knew it, my dad texted me back. That’s all.

I’m so glad we never stopped talking to him, even when it felt like being heard was just wishful thinking.

So #ifyouhavethechance talk to your people now, too. They know you love them, but knowing they can hear you is a gift.

Share with someone special.
